Walleye Weekend 1-26-06
~ Nic Dittbrenner (1/29/2006 @ 10:16 PM)

Lauey with dinner

Another successful trip in the books! We haven't done any ice fishing yet this year, so we decided to get some guys together. Lauey did some research ahead of time and planned out two lakes for us to fish on.

Lauey and I got up to the cabin on Wednesday night and started getting everything ready (by this, I mean we took the snowmobiles and went riding for two hours). Jim, Miesh, and Wood met Lauey and I up at the cabin around 11:30. We all decided to fish DD Lake the next day. None of us had fished the lake, but the anticipation was high.

After packing everything up, we left the cabin around 9:00. Lauey and Jim took the snowmobiles, and the rest of us took the truck and met them at the lake. DD Lake is so far back in the woods, that they don't plow all the way back to the lake; thus the need for Lauey and Jim to meet us with the sleds. After a brief struggle to get the car pushed out; we packed up all the gear, and took the sleds to the lake. We set up in 8-12' of water, primarily on the weed edges. Right away, we caught some small perch, but nothing of any size. We had the tip ups out, but didn't manage a single fish off them. We did have three flags, one with the unmistakable marks of a short walleye bite, but no takers. Even though this wasn't a very good ice lake, the open water prospects of this lake seem good.

The next day it was off to Kentuck Lake. We got to the lake around 2:00 and set up in 8-10' of water with some nice weed growth. The day was very sunny, so we figured that the fish wouldn't start biting until later in the afternoon. Our first flag of the day came while we were setting up the tip ups, but no dice. The second flag came around 3:00. Lauenstein set the hook and the fight was on. He got the fish to the hole and noticed that it was a nice musky! After repeated attempts to get the fish's head into the hole, the fish snapped the line. It looked like a nice fish; I would say about 40". It was pretty quite until 5:15 when we had our 3rd flag. This time it was my turn; ended pulling out a nice 18" walleye; our string of no ice walleyes was over. We ended up catcing 7 more eye's that night including a 20". It was a fun night, and we capped it off with a nice walleye dinner.

Considering the success we had the day before, we decided to head back to Kentuck. We were down one man; Wood had to get back to Madison. On the way to the lake we stopped for a few bloody's; a nice way to prepare yourself for a night of fishing. We made it out to the lake about the same time as the day before and luckily, no one was in our spot. It was very cloudy and there was a winter storm warning in affect for the night, so we figured the fishing would be good right off the bat. We were not disappointed; our first flag came around 3:15 and was pretty steady after that. Lauey and I both caught tagged fish. Apparently they have tagged a lot of the fish in Kentuck. Around 4:30 Miesh landed a nich walleye. The jury is still out as to how long the fish was, but it was between 23-25 inches depending on the measurement taken off the tip up. Either way, it was a great fish and it was thrown back so another fortunate angler could catch her! We ended up taking off around 7:45, righ after we had a double. When we left the lake, we had already acumulated 3" of snow. Thank god we had the Dodge Hemi Powered Shanty along, otherwise it would have been a cold, wet night. It took us two hours to get home that night, but we all thought it was definitely worth it.

Easily one of the best ice fishing weekends I've had. Until next time!

I've always loved this journal... could be my all-time favorite! Especially, with my bro-in-law half naked holding an ice auger.

Cheers!
