2006 Wisconsin Fishing Opener
~ Nic Dittbrenner (5/7/2006 @ 6:35 PM)

Mike what are you doing?

2006 Wisconsin Fishing Opener..the uncertainty was in the air.

Lauey and I left Minneapolis on Friday afternoon very excited to get up to his cabin and meet up with everybody. After a long ride up of discussing fishing strategy, we met Lambie, Bill and Jim at JJ's for drinks and dinner.

We ended up leaving the bar a little early, so we could go back and work on my boat. Lambie and I put a bunch of accessories on the boat while the rest of the boys talked fishing. By the time Lambie and I were done working and hit the hay, it was 1:30.

4 hours later...we were up for opening day of fishing! We headed out to the first lake of the day and headed to where the crowd was at. Lambie and I stayed in the same general area, while Lauey, Bill and Jim went scouting. Jim caught a nice healthy 16 in walleye and a whitefish, but the rest of us were unsuccessful. Sidenote..Lambie had beer and coffee for breakfast..I've never been prouder of my fishing partner.

We decided to leave around noon, grab some lunch and then head to the next lake. Jim had to take off, and Bill decided to fish TI, so it was just going to be Lauey, Lambie and I at the next lake. On the way over to the lake, we saw the fatest motorcycle rideer any of us have seen; it was awesome!

We launched the boat at the next lake and tried a few spots we had in the past. After a little while we decided to try over in some shallower water. We managed to boat a total of 9 walleyes with a 18in the biggest. When we were taking the boat out of the water, a DNR Creel Manager asked to check our fish. It sounded as if the biggest walleye of the day was a 22".

We got back to the cabin and found out that Bill had managed to boat an 18 1/2" and a 19 1/2" walleye, and an 11" crappie! Not bad. Total for the day was 12 walleyes.

We fished a little while on Sunday morning, but only managed to catch 2 northerns. The weather was perfect which made it even harder to leave. Until next time....(TI+4)
