Snowshoe Lake - Ontario
~ Mike Lauenstein (5/31/2006 @ 8:44 PM)

Lambie with an awesome 40" northern! Good fight!

Well, Canada is Canada. We arrived in the country, got searched (again), enjoyed a game of guess the band (thank God for Sirius satellite radio!) and arrived in Kenora, Ontario right on time. As many of you know we got absolutely screwed by Ed Showalter of Showalters Flyin Service. If you have the opportunity to fly with these guys, DO NOT take it. They are idiots.

Ok, now that I am done venting, let me get into the a little bit of the actual action on the trip. We flew out of Kenora and were treated great upon our arrival at the Walsten pier! They unpacked our stuff and loaded up the plane, everything except for four cases of beer, which they said were to heavy for the plane... yeah right. Before we knew it, we were in the air and cruising towards our newly renovated cabin called Mandi's Dream on Snowshoe Lake right on the Manitoba/Ontario border.

We arrived around 5 or so and had plenty of time to head out fishing. It started a little slow, even though Lambie caught a northern on the third cast and I had a 32" in the boat before the first thirty minutes passed. Ben and Nic had already caught a couple walleyes, but nothing of any size. We decided to go to a place called the "nursery". It was a pinch point with current and a deep hole directly down current. Needless to say, this was the only spot that we needed for the rest of the week. It instantly became our safety spot, in case we weren't catching fish anywhere else! We caught fish here consistently for the entire week, until the end of the trip when they moved to the other side of the pinch point.

Besides the two days we had with no beer (and one of them being the day the storm blew in), I would say we had absolutely nothing to complain about. I might have forgot about some of the bad things mainly because there were so many good times, especially learning how effective backtrolling medium and large Rapalas can be!! The rock jumping and the waterfalls were very cool! The shore lunches were unbelievable! I do want to thank Nic for bringing so many different spices and seasoning with because even after 6 straight days of nothing but walleye, beans and ramen, I am still not even close to sick of it! As a matter of fact I had a walleye dinner the Friday we got back! We enjoyed Greek walleye, Mies breaded walleye, great Blackened walleye, walleye tacos (thanks to Ben), etc.

As far as the rest of the trip is concerned, we had multiple moose sightings, nabbed some really nice turtles (both painted and snapping), portaged some very sturdy beaver dams, saw an incredible, green storm that brought 60 mph winds with it, caught enough walleyes to feed a large army, caught a lot of really nice pike including Lambie's 40"er, had 4-5 walleyes over 26", found some beautiful Jumbo Perch mostly between 11-12" and enjoyed some of the finest Blackberry Brandy this world has to offer! It was a very relaxing, entertaining and enjoyable trip in our neighbor to the north and I would definitely go back to Snowshoe Lake in the future.

Cheers!

36er

... still trolling Rapalas over the same spot!

... and a 28er to end the trip on the same spot as these last couple fish. Rapala back troll - Rapala back troll - sausage - back troll...

Another view of the biggest walleye I have seen to date.

Holy Lord... look at the size of that thing.

Lambie's beautiful 40er

Anybody for a little rock diving!?

Cannonball!

Are you sure you want to do this?!

Yes... very sure.

Take a look in the mouth...

Here's a better look

The color in this picture is not off. The storm came in behind a wall cloud and was absolutely lime green. With it it brough ~60mph winds hail and a lot of rain. It was really something to see!!

Shore lunch time!

Nice little stringer!

Focus and Finish.

Ben's 26er

Hmmmm... Back trolling Rapalas DO WORK... hmmmm

... and boy DO they!!!

... and keep working ...

... and working ...

Barton forever...
