2006 Northern WI Duck Opener
~ Nic Dittbrenner (9/24/2006 @ 6:25 PM)

Finally the day arrived...duck opener.

Saturday, September 23rd
Braun and Wood stayed overnight in Cumberland in Friday night, and Lauey and I met them Saturday morning at 7:45am. The Wisconsin duck opener started at 9:00am this year instead of noon. After eating a quick breakfast, we headed to my Uncles.

The plan for the day was to jump ponds until later in the afternoon, and then we would set up. We started at twin lakes(nickname). Wood and I jumped the birds, while Braun and Lauey posted on seperate ends of the pond. All the birds that flushed off the pond flew to the North, but a few came back around, and Wood dropped a hen woodduck. As we were looking for Wood's duck, Lauey dropped another hen woody.

After twin lakes, we went over to the boot. I flushed some ducks over to the guys, and they each connected on one.

We then headed over to another pond and connected with four teal. Braun and I both shot at the same duck, while Lauey shot two and Wood got one. I gave Braun the credit for it....even though I felt good about it.

So far so good, we decided to head into town to grab some lunch. After some grub and a few beers, we headed back out to jump a few more ponds.

We decided to head over to one of Eddie's neighbors to jump of few of his ponds. Braun and I flushed two blue teal to Wood and Lauey and they each finished one off. We went over the other pond and split up again. Braun and I flushed some wood ducks over towards Lauey and Wood. I finished off two drake woodies when we flushed them and then another as they came back around. Lauey also shot a nice mature drake woody.

It was starting to get later in the day, so we headed over to a field to set up for the night hunt. As we pulled up to the field, about a 150 geese took off where we had planned on setting up. We put a couple haybales in a row of corn and waited for something to come in. We waited in the rain, but everything we saw was too far away and going towards another pond that was off limits to us. Finally after waiting for awhile, we were able to call in a couple geese. Braun and I connected on the same one. Nothing else came close.

Sunday
We woke up at 5:00am so we could be out and set up by opening at 6:30. We ran a little late and ended up getting out to our spot right at 6:30. Lauey, Wood and I sat in the boat while Braun decided to sit a little ways away from us. Due to how late we set up, we didn't really get a chance to camo the blind with grass. Not too long after we got to our spot, a goose landed on the other side of the little bay we were in. A few hunters on the other side of the lake shot and the goose flushed right towards us; Braun finished him off with one shot. A little while later a ringneck came flying over and Wood shot him. I went to find the duck; as I was looking for him, Braun dropped a mature drake wood duck with one shot.(He's getting it mounted). I decided it was about time for breakfast, so I cooked up some breakfast sandwiches...yes they were Braunswieger, Egg and Cheese Sandwiches. As I was handing Lauey a sandwich, he set the plate down, grabbed my gun and shot a hen woody flying over us; a great shot. We finished our breakfast, and decided to head in.

We went back to the hotel, packed up our stuff and headed back to my Uncles to jump a few more ponds. We jumped twin lake again and Lauey and I both shot two wood ducks. We jumped the "boot" after that and got two more wood ducks.

16 Wood Ducks
7 Teal
1 Ringneck
2 Geese
1 loaf of Braunshweiger

All in all, a hell of a weekend! Our shooting has definitely gotten better.
