Waterfowlin' at Speath's
~ Ryan Braun (10/24/2006 @ 1:27 PM)
Mike, Mike's sisters boyfriend Nate, and Myself headed to the Beaver Station late Friday Night armed with decoys, guns, ATVs, and my boat. Early Sat. morn we jumped the large goose pond with no results. However, right after we were setting up all my goose decoys, we heard honking and could see a loner over the trees. With calling and some great GHG decoys, it cupped right into our spread, 15 yards in front of the blind. It never had a chance.
Later that morning, Mike got a grouse and completly destroyed a 'shouda been mounted' Drake Woody. That afternoon, we decided to try our hand at the flowage about 15 minutes north of the cabin. We settled in some cattails among the shore. Birds were flying, just not by us. Very promising area since it is just packed with wild rice. It was also packed with thousands of lovely coots - so thick that I actually ran some over on the way back to the launch.
We continued jump shooting Mike's ponds on Sunday and Monday, but the birds were not in great numbers. We ended up with 1 drake and hen woody, 1 GWT, 1 BWT, 1 hen mallard, 1 goose, and 1 grouse. Oh yeah, I shot a coot that was about 10' from the boat on the flowage in sheer boredom. (Mac, Mike's dog, also needed somrthing to.) I am not going to lie, I enjoyed blastin' it.
All in all, not huge #s of birds, but it was a good time. We also finished our blind on the big pond and cut a bunch of firewood. Any Monday spent jumpin' ponds is better than a day at work.
