South Dakota Pheasant Hunt
~ Bill Lauenstein (10/31/2006 @ 12:13 PM)

The first 2 hours of the hunt 14 roosters.

Uncle Dean and I headed out to South Dakota last weekend for some pheasant hunting. Overall we had a great time. We shot our limit on both days. We had meet up with out contacts and ended up hunting with the local boys near Mitchell SD. My young lab "Bella" wasn't out of the truck for 10 minutes when she ran "through" a very sharp barb wire fence, it cost her 20 stiches and me $200.00 to get you back together. She was done hunting per the vet's orders. I ended up hunting my 14 year old lab, Callie who hung in for the balance of the hunt. Dean's dog Neenah, did a great job on flushing and retrieving.

Dean and I would recommend SD for a good pheasant hunt, however, unless you have an uncle who owns land be prepared to pay. We were told that most farmers charge hunters on a daily bases, $120 to $200 per gun per day. They view the birds as a "cash crop". You really can't blame them, if people are willing to pay. As much I love hunting wild pheasants, it makes more sense to hunt our local game farms for much less cost.

Again, a great hunt, just a bit disapointing on the commercialism of hunting wild birds.
