Wood Deer Camp
~ Adam Wood (11/20/2006 @ 7:57 PM)

Deer Camp Group. First double deer hunting I've heard of.

What are we gonna do with all of these?

Wow is all I can say. This was by far our best year. Opening morning started out with a bang. (by the way, Larry needs to check on opening morning times if he is going to be our wake up man. We were up at 4:30 the first morning and sat in the woods for an hour before the gray of morning came) Kevin Keller, a long time friend of the family, shot his buck around 9:30am. His stand faces down into the valley floor on one corner of our land. He made a nice kill on a shot through the brush. Unfortunetly a 13 pointer was on the way to his stand as well but a neighboring hunter shot him at about 8:00 am. His early kill was paramount to the success of the rest of our hunt. Basically we made him push deer around for us the rest of the weekend!

We didn't see any other deer for the rest of the day. I would guess that we were all asleep by about 8:30 that night, excited for the next morning. My dad and I went back to our stands to give it another shot, determined that we had placed them in the best spots. We were wrong. We didn't see a thing. Kevin saw three does as he was pushing deer around for us but we didn't see anything. We went in about 10:30 to get a sandwich and that was when Larry's luck changed.

One of our neighbors, Gary, and his sons came down to the cabin to do a drive with us. Gary was nice enough to let larry sit in his posting spot and move down a little further while Kevin, Shawn, Gary Jr., and I pushed a piece of property behind our cabin that leads up to Gary's house. About 15 minutes into our drive a shot rang out through the woods. Shawn and I were able to hear the bullet wizzing over head. Larry had missed! He told me that the deer began to charge him. He thought the deer was trying to kill him first. His second shot was dead on, right through the heart and lung. Larry shot his first deer...and man what a trophy. The eight pointer is 19 7/8" inside spread with 11 3/4" tine. Nothing wrong with the first being the best.

That great big buck pretty much ended our night. We went for one short drive after that and then turned in for the night. With two buck in the tree we weren't all that excited to get up early so we waited for Gary and his sons to meet up with us at 9:00am and make the same drive again. This time I was in the lucky spot. Sure enough, five minutes into the drive a smaller 9 pointer came crashing out of the woods. He hit the edge of the field and stoped to look around. The second hesitation was all it took. Boom goes the dynamite! Just like that, our third buck! Thats not all though, we stayed put while the drivers finished. Shortly after the buck went down 2 does came out in the same spot. I shot one doe and as it was running off, hit in the belly, 3 more does came out into the field and stopped right in front of me. Man oh man what a day!
