Northern Ontario Grouse Hunt
~ Amanda Lynn Mayhew (10/16/2009 @ 10:03 AM)

Logan and myself after a day of grouse hunting

Well, now... This is my 4th year moose hunting and my 2nd year bear hunting, and guess what? All I shot were grouse. It was fun none the less, and taking any opportunity to spend in the bush, I'M THERE! Frustration does tend to set in though.
I ventured up north from Elmira, ON to Manitouwadge, ON with my three boys via the Sultan Rd. (north of Sudbury on hwy 144) Stopping in at the gas station along the way I ran into a few hunters, and at this time of the year, I actually think that is all you would run into. Hunters orange is the 'IN' color, no matter your age, gender or location. You can feel the excitement in the air, everyone is hyper to get to their camp and set up and get out into the fresh air!
When I arrived in Manitouwadge, the community members had said that this was the first year they have seen so many hunters in years! Good for the community, bad for the moose.
My first day out in the bush, I was cruising around with my youngest son, and my friend, Tanya. We came across a hunting group from the Sudbury area who had scored 2 bull tags and 2 cow tags. I smiled. Lucky bastards, I thought. We shot the sh&t with them for a few moments, exchanged phone numbers (for next year) and carried on our way. That morning we shot a few birds, and Tanya actually cleaned one. For a nothern girl, this was her first bird!
The rest of the week was spent taking the boys out for a drive, collecting more grouse, and spending a day in the bush with my dad. We covered a lot of ground however, the only thing we came across was a big black bear! We just couldn't get out of the truck fast enough though. Like I say, there is always next year!

You know... as much of a pain in the a** the frustrating times are, those are the ones that tend to make me push harder the next time and prepare more thoroughly. If it was easy every time out then it wouldn't be nearly this much fun! Plus, just think of next season when you get that monster... it will mean that much more!

Cheers!
